Arup, as part of the VicConnect Alliance, has been selected by Rail Projects Victoria as preferred tenderer for the Gippsland Line Upgrade’s major package of works.

The section to be improved extends between Traralgon in the Latrobe Valley (about 160km from the Melbourne CBD) to Pakenham on the city’s fringe.

The VicConnect Alliance, which also includes UGL Limited and Decmil, will undertake the design and build for the project with early works being carried out in coming months including site investigations, procurement, engineering and design.

This is a key project in the Regional Rail Revival program and will significantly improve the operations of the line and the customer experience. ”

“Arup will bring a highly experienced team to the Alliance to undertake all the rail infrastructure, architectural and stations design and provide specialist environmental, sustainability and rail assurance advice,” Liam said.

“We are proud to be selected by Rail Projects Victoria and looking forward to working with our partners to support local communities.”

The major works package includes:

  • second platforms and station amenities at Bunyip, Longwarry and Morwell stations, and activating the second platform at Traralgon Station

  • extension of the Morwell crossing loop

  • track duplication

  • level crossings and signalling upgrades.

Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said the upgrade will improve train services and frequency.

“This major package of works will have significant benefits for passengers, including 40-minute off-peak frequency for trains between Traralgon and Melbourne and more reliable services right along the Gippsland Line,” she said.

The project is targeted for completion in late 2022.
