Arup and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) have renewed their global knowledge partnership – continuing to push for circular economy principles to be applied across the built environment.

Since the partnership inception, Arup and EMF have contributed to heightening industry recognition of circular economy principles in addressing climate change, resource scarcity and environmental degradation.  Projects such as 1 Triton Square, London and Quay Quarter Tower, Sydney highlight how adaptive reuse and a focus on reducing embodied carbon can have a dramatic effect on a building’s environmental impact.

Arup has consistently raised the bar for the adoption of circular economy innovation in the built environment sector and for promoting the opportunity it presents as a framework for urban development. We are excited about renewing our partnership with Arup and to working together to drive greater awareness and wide scale adoption of circular economic practices. ” Andrew Morlet Chief Executive Officer, Ellen MacArthur Foundation

The jointly-produced report “Principles to Practices: Realising the value of circular economy in real estate” has been widely commended by academia, global advocacy groups and the investment community alike for its approach to developing compelling business cases. Its foundations have been cited at global events such as the World Economic Forum, and academics at institutions including the University of Cambridge and University of Austin are referring to the report in leading research on how to drive change in our sector.

The next phase of the partnership will continue to raise the awareness of the benefits of circular economy on real estate and the shift in business models.  To support the renewed agreement, Arup’s Europe Region Chair, Eva Hinkers, has been appointed as the Partnership Director.

The circular economy represents huge potential for the built environment - I truly believe that ecological and economic benefits go hand in hand. We want to continue working towards being a leading consultant for the circular economy in the built environment and continue supporting the shift of business models. Through this partnership, and tangible project examples, we will create catalysts for systemic change. ” Eva Hinkers Eva Hinkers Director
