Arup has claimed a double win at the Advancing Net Zero (ANZ) Ideas Competition, scooping the top awards in both the Future Building and Existing Building categories.

The first of its kind in Hong Kong, the competition was organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) with Swire Properties as the Principal Partner, to seek new concepts and ideas from architects, academics, surveyors, designers and technology experts in Hong Kong and abroad on how to move the city towards its target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

To enhance the implementation feasibility of the proposed solutions, the real data of two office towers – site of One Taikoo Place and Oxford House in Taikoo Place – were provided to the participating teams. The entries were assessed anonymously by a professional jury of renowned global experts against three main themes: (i) zero carbon and ultra-energy efficiency; (ii) embodied carbon; and (iii) health and sustainability.

Taikoo Green Ribbon – Winner of the Future Building category

Boasting over 4,250m² of green open space and garden, a 1km landscaped ANZ jogging path and a series of state-of-the-art technologies, the Taikoo Green Ribbon is designed as a unique and innovative workplace that introduces an entirely new urban eco-lifestyle concept. Apart from restoring the local ecosystem and biodiversity by using extensive green elements, ranging from wildlife attracting flowers to wind-resistant plants to create a nature-driven community, the distinctive building also incorporates sets of passive and active environmental systems inside and out to create an advanced net-zero and carbon neutral development. The design also utilises an almost full natural ventilation strategy for the offices to minimise energy consumptions and enhance user’s wellbeing and comfort at the same time.

Leveraging on our multidisciplinary design expertise, the Taikoo Green Ribbon addresses the needs of a future workplace integrating urban greening, human comfort, flexibility and adaptability, wellness and work life balance. ” Dennis Ho Dennis Ho Director

The Living Lab – Winner of the Existing Building category

Using a holistic design approach to reduce energy demand and increase on-site renewable energy generation at the same time to achieve a net-zero goal, The Living Lab is a nurturing ground to encourage behavioural change from every little step. Boasting a renewable energy system, the building upcycles the algae in the façade together with food waste and black water to generate a renewable energy supply of electricity and hot water for daily operations through the tri-digestion process.

The Living Lab adopts a data-driven approach in building operations, incorporating cutting-edge technologies in renovation plans with a practical methodology and timeline. The ideas can serve as a reference for the industry in formulating guidelines and regulations in decarbonising existing buildings. ” (c) Arup Dr Tony Lam Director of Sustainability

The winning entries are now showcased at Linkbridge, Lincoln House at Taikoo Place until 17 December. The detail reports of the Taikoo Green Ribbon and The Living Lab are also available online.

We’re honoured and privileged to receive these accolades. They underline our strong commitment to sustainable development and our expertise in delivering net zero buildings. As a leader in the industry, Arup has committed to achieving net zero emissions across our entire operations by 2030. More recently, we have pledged to go further and faster to tackle operational and embodied emissions by undertaking whole lifecycle carbon assessments for all our buildings projects – new and retrofit – from next year. We’re keen to develop innovative approaches, solutions and business models necessary for the entire sector to reach 2050 goals. ” Vincent Cheng Vincent Cheng Director
