Global sustainable development consultancy Arup has produced a bespoke Decarbonisation Plan for Ebbsfleet Development Corporation (EDC), illustrating the new Garden City’s route to net zero. Mapping the community’s decarbonisation pathways, fulfilment of the plan will reduce emissions per person by 90% in comparison to the local average in 2020.

Published as part of the Ebbsfleet Implementation Framework, the Decarbonisation Plan guides the delivery of the Corporation’s sustainability vision. Encompassing both carbon modelling and management for optimal environmental outcomes throughout all stages of the scheme’s asset lifecycles, the solutions-focussed plan is specifically related to buildings, transport and waste following the Green House Gas Protocol for communities (GPC).

The launch of the Decarbonisation Plan demonstrates EDC’s intention to achieve net zero carbon in Ebbsfleet, identifying the role the Corporation can play in combating climate change, ensuring that wider partners and residents are empowered, informed, and supported in joining us on this positive path towards sustainability. ” Simon Dudley Chair, Ebbsfleet Development Corporation Board

Mapping the new community’s pathway to net-zero, fulfilment of the plan will reduce carbon emissions per person by 90% in comparison to the local average in 2020.

By outlining and assessing the opportunities for carbon removal across Ebbsfleet, the plan maps the impact of emission reduction strategies aligned to the four overarching principles of carbon management best-practice carbon in the built environment, outlined in the latest PAS2080 guidance. This informed action and resource designation for the Corporation to prioritise and promote across the various pathways to provide a framework for holistic decarbonisation.

It has been an enormous privilege to utilise Arup’s global expertise in carbon management and modelling to support Ebbsfleet Development Corporation with its sustainability agenda. The Decarbonisation Plan sets a benchmark for design and development in the built environment, enabling ambitious sustainability objectives to be at the heart of urban planning. With the fulfilment of the plan, Ebbsfleet Garden City gives a first look at what is possible for future UK towns and cities. ” Christopher Pountney Christopher Pountney Associate Director, Arup
