Arup shines with five top honours at the Green Building Award 2023

The firm’s remarkable achievements were recognised at the Green Building Award 2023 (GBA 2023), including five Grand awards, nine Merit awards and three Special Citations on United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

11 SKIES

K11 Atelier 11 SKIES, the office portion of 11 SKIES bagged the Grand Award in the New Buildings category - Completed Projects (Commercial). Located in the SKYCITY at Hong Kong International Airport, it is the city’s largest hub for retail, dining and entertainment integrating wealth management and wellness services.

Arup designed a comprehensive sustainability framework for this project, featuring solutions that brought added value to energy efficiency, and the health and wellbeing of building users. One of the highlights was the largest photovoltaic and thermal (PVT) installation in Asia with a total of 252 hybrid solar PVT panel modules, covering an area of over 400m2. We also collaborated with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to introduce the first application of two AI-driven indoor air quality and thermal comfort monitoring and controlling systems.

AIRSIDE

AIRSIDE cliched the highest honour in the New Buildings category - Completed Projects (Commercial). Working closely with our client, Nan Fung Group, Arup provided total engineering solutions that helped transform the former airport site into a people-oriented inclusive community environmentally and socially. 

We adopted the UN SDGs as the design blueprint; every design detail has been carefully crafted following this framework. With our holistic approach, the project has become the city’s first private development to receive five highest sustainable building certifications.

Hang Seng Bank Headquarters workplace transformation

The transformation of Hang Seng Bank headquarters was named top in the Existing Buildings category - Completed Projects (Commercial). With a total floor area of 35,300m2, the bank aimed to have a transformation towards a better working environment that meets their global workplace standards, improves work efficiency and offers future flexibility for technological advancement.

As the project manager, Arup advised and supervised the fit-out works in the live office building. We meticulously coordinated the sequence of works to ensure a smooth transformation, particularly for areas such as retail banking, trading floor, administration offices, executive floors, boardroom and function rooms spreading across 20 floors and two basement levels.

Public Housing Development at Queen’s Hill, Fanling

Winning the top honour in the New Buildings category - Completed Projects (Residential) and a Special Citation on UN SDGs, the large housing development project is recognised for its vibrant and environmentally friendly designs, conservation of the local history, trees and heritage, and engagement of the local community in promoting sustainable living. 

As the BEAM Plus consultant, we walked through the whole project cycle to outline sustainability frameworks via the Detail Design Review Panel (DDRP) review, technical feasibilities studies on phasing and site strategy on microclimate and environment impacts. The project successfully attained a Final Platinum certification in New Buildings V1.2, which is the top recognition in the rating system. 

Revitalisation of Central Market

Central Market revitalisation was honoured with the Grand Award in the Existing Buildings category - Completed projects (Commercial). The Grade III-listed historic building has been revitalised to become a vibrant community hotspot at the heart of the city.

As the structural engineer of the project, we used a range of traditional and new approaches and technologies to retain the original features of the building. These included the implementation of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) to restore structural capacity of deteriorated concrete members with minimum disruption and alteration to the appearance.

Co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and the Professional Green Building Council, the biennale award aims to recognise building-related projects and organisations with outstanding performances and contributions towards a sustainable built environment while advocating the wider adoption of green building practices throughout a building’s lifecycle.
