High Speed 1 (HS1) won three awards at the 2008 Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Awards held at the Hilton Hotel in Park Lane, London on 6 February 2009. Arup was jointly credited for each award.

The winning categories were:

  • The Silver Jubilee Cup - the top Planning Prize in the UK - awarded to HS1.
  • Award for Heritage - heritage and archaeology for HS1.
  • Award for Infrastructure - for HS1 (entered for the HS1 Planning Forum).
  • The awards reflect the successful collaboration of the HS1 team – the client Union Railways (North) Limited, designer and project managing team Rail Link Engineering, (made up of staff from Arup, Bechtel, Halcrow and Systra), and the local planning authorities and environmental / heritage consultants.

Arup played a leading role in the delivery of the archaeological and heritage successes and delivery of the planning and stakeholder consultation process via the Planning Forum. This encompassed Arup led areas of planning and consents, environment, heritage, ecology, noise and vibration and landscape architecture, and structural and civil engineering.
