Arup will provide business planning expertise and a $5000 grant to a new community enterprise which has won the ‘Partnering for Impact Award’ at the 2020 Zest Awards.

Arup presented the award to Neighbourhood Jobs in recognition of its collaborative approaches to training and employing young people at risk of long-term disadvantage in Western Sydney.

We are partnering with Neighbourhood Jobs as part of our commitment to working with local communities and groups to bring choice and opportunity to young folks in Western Sydney. ”

Home to two million people, Western Sydney is Australia’s most significant urban growth region. However in some areas, youth unemployment exceeds 26% and many young people are disengaged  not learning or earning  and at risk of long-term disadvantage. The covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated underlying issues.

Neighbourhood Jobs is a local property care business which says its mission is to ‘smash the cycle of intergenerational poverty and youth homelessness by employing young people’.

We’re providing hands-on training and paid employment to young people, who, for many different reasons, have had a hard time with school or have had some life experiences get in the way of their dreams. ” Heather Chaffey Co-founder, Neighbourhood Jobs and Divisional Manager Sustainable Communities, Wentworth Community Housing

“We walk alongside our young employees providing coaching and training in both occupational skills and life skills so that they complete the development program ready for work,” said Heather.

“We appreciate Arup’s practical support of our work. Having experienced consultants work with us to advance our priorities and plans will be invaluable. The timing is perfect as we re-group after a hectic, challenging  and successful – first two years, and the impacts of the pandemic.”

Arup is on the ground in Western Sydney; we want to help the region fulfil its potential and ambition to be a dynamic community of economic, cultural, social and environmental vitality. ”
