Arup scooped six awards at the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) Structural Excellence Award 2022, including two Grand Awards and four Commendation Merits. The winning projects demonstrate how Arup pushes the boundaries to shape next-generation landmarks that redefine the urban fabric of our cities.

We are delighted to be recognised once again for our efforts in pursuit of excellence. By continuously exploring cutting-edge technologies and applying our creative design approaches, we work seamlessly with the project teams together to deliver the best solutions for our clients and realise some of the most innovative and technically demanding projects. ” Michael Kwok Michael Kwok Asia Pacific Council Chair

M+, Hong Kong

M+ clinched the Grand Award in the Hong Kong non-residential project category. Working in collaboration with architects Herzog & de Meuron and TFP Farrells, Arup provided total engineering design services for this new landmark in the West Kowloon Cultural District.

The building sits directly above tunnels for the MTR Airport Express and Tung Chung Line, which runs just 1.5m below ground level. In addition to controlling tunnel movements during the construction stage in accordance with the strict limits set by Hong Kong’s transit and building authorities, we designed five mega transfer trusses to span the M+ structure over the tunnels. The two transfer trusses supporting the vertical tower of M+ are 18m deep, span 55m and each carry around 30,000 tonnes of load, which is equivalent to 1,000 fully laden double decker buses. Our structural solution also helped create the museum’s subterranean display space called the ‘Found Space’.

Suzhou Bay Cultural Centre, Suzhou

Suzhou Bay Cultural Centre won the top award in the mainland / overseas category. The mega development houses two iconic buildings – Suzhou Opera House and Wujiang Exhibition Centre, linked by a stunning double ribbon structure. It consists of a top ribbon with a span of 100m – the largest in China – and a bottom ribbon stretching over 370m – also the longest in the country.

Arup conducted rigorous computational analyses and used advanced digital tools to realise this complicated structure. We also provided innovative solutions to ensure structural resilience while suiting the artistic, technical and operational needs of this world-class performance facility.
