Arup, in collaboration with an AI technology company AI Gaspar, has won the 2021 Hong Kong Smart Transportation Challenge for designing a digital solution that helps ease traffic congestion and improve safety in Hong Kong Science Park and the surrounding area.

Organised by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP), the competition aims to inspire revolutionary planning and innovative technology solutions to enhance traffic efficiency, pedestrian safety and productivity around Hong Kong Science Park – a technology hub with 1,000 companies and more than 15,000 staff members, as well the nearby Pak Shek Kok area. The winning project will have an opportunity to be developed into a proof-of-concept implementation.

Our proposal has been selected from among 30 worldwide contestants as the best solution in analysing current traffic situations in the study areas, forecasting future situations and applying smart technologies to relieve traffic issues and assist in future planning.

Combining our transport planning and technological expertise, we proposed a comprehensive solution that includes a network of mobile apps, web portals and smart traffic light systems that make use of historical traffic open data, real-time GPS, camera video analytics and sensor data to instantaneously optimise traffic flows, encourage the use of more sustainable public transport and active mobility, and provide more transparent travel information for tenants, visitors, facility management teams and transport service providers.

Deriving from in-depth big data analysis and traffic simulation, we also formulated an enhanced traffic arrangement plan to minimise conflicts between pedestrians and vehicular traffic while providing adequate queuing space for passenger safety.

The competition provides an excellent opportunity for the application of smart technologies in Hong Kong to alleviate traffic congestion issues, allow better transport management and help users make informed decisions. We look forward to continuing our effort to further unleash the potential of data-driven transport services. ” Clement Ho Clement Ho Associate Director and East Asia Digital Transport Leader
