Our circular timber bridge design will be showcased at the Build Better Now virtual pavilion during COP26, alongside 17 other projects showcasing some of the most sustainable built environment design solutions to the climate crisis.

The COP26 climate summit will bring together governments to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement during November. The Green Building Council’s Build Better Now virtual exhibition and event series addresses the pressing need for change, showcasing some of the most innovative, scalable ideas to support the global transition towards net zero.

Focused on renewable materials, modularity and re-use, our Bridges of Laminated Timber (BoLT) design is a strong example of how the adaptive use of natural materials like timber can help create a more sustainable transport infrastructure. Usable for both new and existing crossings up 25 metres in length, BoLT goes beyond the timber-concrete composite to replace the traditional concrete superstructure with laminated timber, potentially rendering the entire structure CO2 neutral.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Material Circularity Indicator finds the circularity of the materials in this timber bridge- designed alongside partners Heijmans and Schaffitzel in response to a call for circular proposals by Dutch highways agency Rijkswaterstaat - is 50% higher than a standard concrete deck. Given the sheer amount of carbon-intensive materials typically required for building and maintaining a road network, tweaks to incorporate re-usable sustainable materials can have a major cumulative effect.

Winning the race to net zero means prioritising zero emissions buildings, infrastructure and cities. To find out more about how BoLT can help in our journey towards net zero, visit the ‘Build Better Now’ virtual exhibition between 31 October – 12 November
