Arup continues to strengthen its sustainability advisory services offering after supporting Marbella’s upscale seaside resort Real de la Quinta to secure a BREEAM Communities certificate, the first of its kind in Spain.

As BREEAM consultant for developer La Quinta, Arup coordinated the entire process, helping the client turn its green ambitions into a tangible reality. The green certificate, which obtained a “Very Good” rating, measures the sustainability of developments at neighbourhood scale and beyond.

Within minutes of both Marbella and Puerto Banús, Real de La Quinta is the first development in Spain to secure a final BREEAM Community seal, known in the local market as BREEAM ES Urbanismo.

Located next to the UNESCO protected biosphere reserve of the Sierra de las Nieves, the resort brings together the best of a Mediterranean coastal living with contemporary ‘smart living’ features. Facilities include a manmade lake and beach, a range of wellness and sports facilities including a golf course; and a range of hotels and residential areas, together with restaurants and retail space.

The Real de la Quinta BREEAM Certification – the first large-scale development to successfully secure a green seal in Spain – places Arup at the forefront of sustainable consulting in Spain, delivering excellent outcomes for our clients, our communities – and the environment. ” Susana Saiz Susana Saiz Director

Sustainability is at the heart of the development, with a range of green measures designed to optimise its environmental impact, including sourcing up to 15% of the total energy consumption from onsite renewable sources and the introduction of rainwater harvesting, which will help reduce water consumption by up to 40%.

Our sustainability consultants carried out the design, implementation and monitoring of the proposed sustainability strategies; while coordinating the certification process and providing technical advice during the construction of the site’s infrastructure.
