Arup has been appointed by Chinese Temples Committee to digitalise the asset management for the historic temples in Hong Kong.

To revitalise these unique heritage buildings and empower the temples’ administration with digital tools, three Chinese temples in Ap Lei Chau and Aberdeen have been selected as pilot projects where a digital twin will be developed to enable digital asset management.

We’re excited to be the lead consultant for this pioneer project, working with heritage specialists and geospatial experts to protect and nurture our heritage buildings and monuments of Chinese culture. With our domain expertise in digital twins and the built environment, we trust we could provide the best outcome for the project, and extend this robust digitalisation framework to more temples in the future. ” Sankar VS Sankar VS Director | East Asia Digital Services and Products Leader

The digital twin will encompass emerging technologies such as LiDAR scanner at 1mm resolution and 2mm accuracy compliance, integrated with close-range terrestrial photogrammetry at decimal mm resolution with 3D printing quality, to generate precise 3D BIM. IoT elements such as sensors will be installed in the temples to collect environmental data and building health status statistics.

An asset information management platform will be developed to consolidate the operation data and establish a common data environment to support data-driven management.  Moreover, VR / AR will be leveraged; and the different phases and eras of historic temples will be modelled to present the evolution and culture beyond time.  An interactive multi-dimensional display portal will be delivered with corresponding historical information for interpretation, education, preservation and virtual tour uses.
