Arup has made an impact at Singapore’s prestigious Land Transport Excellence Awards for our work on two projects, Woodlands Station on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) and Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ).

We were recognised as an outstanding team that exemplified design excellence in rail or road infrastructure in the category of Best Design Rail / Road Infrastructure – Project Partner.

Arup, in association with our architecture partners Aedas, designed the TE2 Woodlands interchange station with future-focused outcomes for people, places and the planet.

This aspiration drove our user-centric designs, including an alignment which noticeably reduced walking time for travellers connecting between the North-South Line and the new TEL platform. It also enhanced integration with future development, saving 6,000 m2 in land sterilisation and 8,120 tons of embodied carbon from an optimised cut-and-cover tunnel design.

We have previously received three other awards for Woodlands Station including the BCA Design and Engineering Safety Awards, the Association for Consulting Engineers Singapore’s Design Excellence Awards and the IES Prestigious Engineering Awards

This project is enhancing ‘car-lite’ rail transportation and providing better options for businesses and the community. Dedicated to sustainable development, Arup will continue to build on our successes of this project to deliver more socially valuable and sustainable solutions. ”

Receiving an accolade in the Best Design Land Transport Integration category, the project team, comprising Arup, DP Architects and Lendlease, was recognised for demonstrating design excellence in land transport integration with the adjacent PLQ development.

PLQ is a mixed-use development located in Paya Lebar, a regional commercial hub in the east of Singapore. Integrating residential, retail and commercial components, it forms a part of Singapore’s CBD decentralisation plan to reduce congestion and bring jobs closer to home. The development is seamlessly connected to the Paya Lebar interchange station on the East-West Line and Circle Line, as well as the wider park connector and end-of-trip facilities to encourage active mobility.

Our work on PLQ has also received an ACES Design Excellence Award from the Association of Engineers Singapore.

PLQ is an exemplar project that demonstrated the team’s attention to technical excellence and quality, originality and innovation, and the result has influenced thinking about how future developments can be holistically planned with transport connectivity. ”
