Compliance vs Comfort: Designing for users
Station design is nested within a growing web of conflicting standards, compliance requirements, and third party checks, that can sometimes lead to compromised project outcomes. In a world where we are increasing our reliance on public transport, we need to remind ourselves what great outcomes we are really aiming to achieve and through targeted consideration of users’ particular needs and use patterns, future stations can be comfortable places for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.
Nick Birmingham, Arup’s Australasian Architecture Leader, and Lucy O’Connor, one of Arup’s User Centred Designers, explored what a comfortable station might look like and how stations could facilitate better urban, station and people experiences.
