Improving perceptions of safety after dark: Using evidence-based lighting design to create safer stations at night-time

Research has found that lighting at night is one of the most important built environment factors to contribute towards perceptions of safety in cities. After dark, we know that people are less likely to frequent areas where they don’t feel safe, especially women and girls. This significantly impacts people’s mobility habits and the safety of stations and the public transport network is critical in achieving truly inclusive and accessible mobility for a diverse population.

Tim Hunt, Melbourne Lighting Leader at Arup, shared how lighting is integrated into station architectural elements and landscape features, with a focus on improving perceptions of safety after dark.
