Breaking down the barriers to good noise outcomes: How achieving the best outcome is not always about building walls

Noise and vibration produced by railways can significantly impact people and noise barriers are often considered to provide better outcomes. At the same time, visual amenity and passive security within stations is also important and designs that maximise visibility and social interaction help to not only reduce vandalism and anti-social behaviour, but to also increase the perception of safety by all users.

Kym Burgemeister, acoustician and AV & Theatre Consultancy Leader at Arup, explored how controlling noise near railways requires careful consideration of the wider impacts on the neighbouring community, passenger-experience and cost of construction and ongoing maintenance and that taking a balanced view is key to achieving the best outcome for all.
