Italian natural water group San Pellegrino laid the first stone of its new flagship headquarters in northern Italy at a ceremony on September 27th.

Designed by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), the new headquarters and bottling plant will celebrate the character of the site, where San Pellegrino has bottled water since 1899. The 17,000 m² campus mixes functional and experiential design: while the Factory of the Future will significantly expand production capacity, it will also draw in visitors and guests, which the architect hopes will be immersed in the leisurely feel of a thermal spa.

The energy and environmental strategies is focused on the use of renewable energy sources and the creation of synergies with the existing industrial facilities, in addition to the recovery and recycling of natural resources, in particular water. ” Giammichele Melis Giammichele Melis Project Director

Archways are a design leitmotiv across this ‘temple of water’, which pays homage to the mountainous landscape of Lombardy in Italy, the source of San Pellegrino’s prized water. Offering a fresh take on classic elements of Italian architecture, arches will feature on arcades, tunnels, as well as the piazza and portico.

Sustainability and energy efficiency are key drivers for this project, which highlights the purity of the San Pellegrino water. Arup was appointed to help define the energy strategy and design the multi-disciplinary building services.
