Arup has been appointed as the lead consultant to the Danish Road Directorate (Vejdirektoratet) for the design, procurement and site supervision of the new Roskilde Fjord Link.

The infrastructural project includes 6.6km dual carriageway and a 1.4km tolled high-bridge. Intended to decrease congestion in the city of Frederikssund, where there is currently only a fixed crossing over the fjord, the new link will act as a by-pass to the south of Frederikssund.

We consider this project as being technically challenging because of the archeological situation in and around the Roskilde Fjord and the environmental impact on the Natura 2000 area.

Jens Holmboe, Director Construction Division at Vejdirektoratet

We are very pleased to have Arup on this project. It is great to have Arup now permanently based in Denmark, bringing new ideas and an international approach which will eventually lead to an improvement of the overall performance on our projects.

Erik Stoklund Larsen, Project Director at Vejdirektoratet

The work will be carried out across several Arup offices in Europe. The contract starts with the preliminary works which are due to occur prior the construction process. The remit covers the entire design from geotechnics, highways, drainage and bridge design to environmental, maritime and water engineering.

This project is a game changer for Arup in Denmark because of its size and duration. It is also a firm step in the right direction of developing our infrastructure practice in Scandinavia in line with our strategy. Therefore I am extremely delighted and proud of the performance of our team.

Sander den Blanken, Bridges and Civil Structures Practice Leader Europe Region, Arup

On January 10 Arup signed the contract in Copenhagen. The construction is due to start in 2016, and the opening of the link is expected in 2019.
