The collaborative art installation for the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in Washington DC was awarded by the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IESNYC).

On 10 May the 34th annual IALD International Lighting Design Awards celebrated twenty-two projects from eight countries, which represent some of the most innovative and inspiring work found anywhere in the world of architectural lighting design. The Arup team was awarded a special citation for the creative and collaborative enhancement of an ephemeral canvas.

A month later on 15 June, IESNYC announced the recipients of the 2017 Lumen Awards at the 49th annual Lumen Gala. Ten Lumen Awards were presented and the winners were recognised for their professionalism, excellence, and originality in lighting design. Our lighting team won the Citation Award for the Lighting of an Art Installation.

Arup’s lighting designers helped create this award-winning, immersive installation that blurs the line between the art and its illumination. Seven-colour source LED projectors scripted via DMX programming needed to be carefully installed to achieve the proper aiming and angles without creating glare or distractions for visitors. This dynamic and vibrant presentation also allowed the artist to explore the nature of shadow, using the large blank walls as additional canvas.

The result is a carefully crafted installation that offers a unique perspective from every vantage point within the gallery, responding in kind to each flowing gesture of the art. The piece is now a part of the Smithsonian’s permanent collection.
