Australian first use of 46m Quickcell Super Girders

On the weekend of 9 -11 September, seven Quickcell Super Girders were installed as part of the Port of Brisbane’s $110m Port Drive Upgrade project.

Developed by Quickcell Technology Products with Arup, the girders are 46m pre-cast pre-stressed simply supported single length bridge girders and are an Australian first innovation. 

Part of the Lucinda Drive Bridge duplication, this new type of girder was required to safely span the existing Queensland Rail lines, removing the need for construction works within the rail corridor.

As lead designer, Arup is working closely with the Port of Brisbane and principal contractor Seymour Whyte to deliver the duplication of Port Drive, construction of a four-lane overpass over the Kite Street intersection, duplication of Lucinda Drive bridge, and a separated shared path for pedestrian and cyclist use between Pritchard Street and Kite Street.

The project is due for completion in mid 2018.
