Mona Holtkötter, a building services engineer in Arup's Dublin office, is one of Ireland's first WELL Accredited Professionals (WELL APTM).

Mona earned the WELL AP credential through the International WELL Building InstituteTM (IWBITM). The WELL AP credential is the new, leading credential signifying advanced knowledge of health and well-being in the built environment, and specialisation in the WELL Building StandardTM (WELL).

Mona joined Arup in 2012 and is fast becoming an expert in the field of energy and environmental design. A LEED AP, BD+C since 2015, she has developed a keen interest in sustainability, energy simulation and influencing design decisions for the well-being of building occupants. WELL is intended to complement environmentally focused rating systems, such as LEED, by providing criteria focused on human sustainability.

WELL is the first building standard to focus exclusively on the health and wellness of the people in buildings. WELL is an evidence and performance-based system for measuring, certifying and monitoring features – air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind – that impact human health and well-being in the built environment.

Mona successfully passed the WELL AP exam in December 2016, an assessment based on the expertise of leading practitioners in the field of design, health and wellness in the built environment, developed using rigorous test development best practices from the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI).

WELL APs help clients from gap analysis to full certification. Mona is currently completing an initial gap analysis against WELL Building Standard for Core and Shell Compliance for 10 Molesworth Street and leading the design team for a fully WELL compliant building for 1 Wilton Terrace, Dublin, both of which are IPUT developments.

The role of built environment professionals is expanding to include designing full occupant experience with a focus on people centred design. As one of four WELL APs in Ireland, Mona is at the forefront of creating buildings that optimise occupant health, as well as environmental outcomes through her LEED AP BD+C credential.
