Arup paves way for Auckland’s zero waste targets

First Street Foundation and Arup Release Latest Report Finding 13.4 Million Properties Will Be Newly Exposed to Hurricane Winds From Climate Change

A new report from nonprofit science and technology group First Street Foundation, in partnership with global sustainable development consultancy Arup, provides a peer-reviewed wind model that uses open science to identify the likelihood and financial impacts of tropical cyclones for all properties in the contiguous United States today, and up to 30 years in the future under a changing climate. Titled “The 7th National Risk Assessment: Worsening Winds,” the report combines high resolution measurements of well over 50,000 synthetic storm tracks to determine likely sustained wind direction and speed, adjust for local surface roughness effects on wind speed, and quantify the probability and magnitude of 3-second gusts that drive the majority of wind-related losses.

Why the decarbonisation of our buildings needs sound data analysis

Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance selects Arup to develop City Handbook for Carbon Neutral Buildings

The global Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance (CNCA) has appointed Arup to develop the City Handbook for Carbon Neutral Buildings to offer cities a practicable approach to reducing CO₂emissions through low carbon construction.

Buildings are responsible for 40% of global energy consumption and produce 33% of greenhouse gas emissions. With a large chunk of new construction taking place in urban environments, cities have a role to play in encouraging sustainable construction methods and creating a market demand for low-carbon and bio-based materials such as timber, hemp and wool.

Founded in 2014, CNCA brings together 21 leading global cities working to achieve carbon neutrality as rapidly as possible and ahead of national and international targets. The Handbook will support cities to minimise the carbon footprint of buildings across CNCA’s network and beyond.

The Handbook will be designed as an interactive tool that urban policymakers and planners can tailor to specific building projects, including step-by-step guidance on how to reduce embodied carbon and implement circular economy principles.

The Handbook will build on CNCA’s City Policy Framework for Dramatically Reducing Embodied Carbon that charted this new policy territory by outlining 52 policies cities can adopt to reduce embodied carbon emissions.

“Emissions during construction are a major contributor to lifetime emissions for capital projects. While operations may have decarbonisation opportunities long after construction completion, the embodied carbon emissions from construction are set in stone as the project is executed. Up-front carbon emissions account for up to 50 percent of total life cycle emissions”, says Peter Vangsbo, leading Sustainability and Climate Services in Arup in Denmark.

“The time is now for both industry leaders and city policymakers to make tackling embodied emissions a priority,” according to Vangsbo. “Arup’s partnership with CNCA aims to help cities combat climate change by reducing embodied emissions.”

Simone Mangili, CNCA’s Executive Director, adds: “Our aim is to support engagement between policymakers and key players across the public and private sector – from architects and engineers to urban planners to procurement and permitting officials – in continuing to chart a collaborative approach to designing sustainable buildings for a carbon positive future”.

The Handbook for Carbon Neutral Buildings will identify green supply chains for residential, commercial and industrial building stock, while providing general and location-specific guidance on the procurement of biobased and low-carbon materials, including a catalogue of biobased alternatives for structures, cladding and insulation.

Using inclusive design to enable Indonesia’s shift to low carbon transport

In the Indonesian city of Semarang, where rapid urbanisation has led to an unsustainable dependency on cars, city leaders are focussed on creating reliable, efficient and affordable public transport, as well as cycling and walking networks.

Zubin’s Family Centre opens: first facility catering to special needs of ethnic minority children in Hong Kong

Green transition creates $10.3T opportunity for the global economy by 2050, a new report finds

A new report from Arup and Oxford Economics estimates that new green industries could be worth $10.3T to the global economy by 2050, equivalent to 5.2% of global GDP that year.

While many see the green transition as a cost, the report demonstrates the substantial benefits and the need to move quickly to capture them. It includes three unique tools to help companies and policymakers identify opportunities and take the right action to capture them: A new taxonomy for green economic activities; a framework to identify which opportunities work best for which economies; and a policy action tool for policymakers in different contexts.

Arup, Lendlease, Climate-KIC and Built by Nature host ‘Perception of Timber’ exhibition at MIND, Milan’s innovation district

Arup is working with Climate-KIC, the EU’s climate innovation initiative; real estate investor Lendlease and grant-making fund Built by Nature to co-curate the new ‘Perception of Timber’ exhibition to raise awareness of the benefits of building in timber. The initiative also included WTA, Polimi and Enso as partners.

Taking place in Milan’s innovation district, MIND, the exhibition stems from a series of workshops organised by the partners to explore barriers in the use of timber as a construction material and create a roadmap towards widespread adoption across Europe.

The initiative explored why and how the market can move to adopt mass timber as a low carbon technology to decarbonise our building stock by engaging with key industry players: developers, investors, designers, insurers and assets owners; and the public administration.

“To meet Europe’s climate change targets, we need to develop our buildings in a more sustainable manner through the use of regenerative and nature-based resources such as timber,” said Tecla Caroli, an architect at Arup in Milan.

Arup leveraged its local market knowledge and engineering expertise on timber building design to offer cross-cutting technical and content advice during the design of the workshops and the curation of the exhibition.

Upping the ante on timber’s social, environmental and economic feasibility, the exhibition walked the visitors around the 9x9m2 MIND timber pavilion, prototypes of multistorey timber structures, modular stands of timber beams and columns, cubes of laminated timber, and a suite of learning boards. Arup showcased its design work on three high rise timber buildings – HAUT, 80 M Street SE and Sky Believe in Better Building.

Sustainability win at the Singapore Structural Awards 2022

Arup has taken out the Sustainability Award at this year’s Singapore Structural Awards for our work on Kallang Polyclinic and Long-Term Care. Hosted by the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the awards were held amidst overwhelming participation with 21 shortlisted projects.
