In November 2017, the C40 Climate Leadership Group kicked off the global Reinventing Cities competition. The competition brief asks participants to transform one of 39 underutilized sites around the world into an exemplar of sustainable, resilient design. Eighty-two teams, including some of the world’s best designers, architects, and urban planners, will compete in the final round. The final winning teams will be announced in Spring, 2019.

Montreal

Two teams from our Montreal office, with support from our Toronto staff, have been shortlisted for the Montreal De la Commune Service Yard site. One team is working with Rachel Julien, White Arkitekter, Rubin & Rotman Architects, and Convercité. The other is collaborating with Group Montoni, Sid Lee Architecture, and Vertima.

Our local knowledge of Montreal together with our international multidisciplinary expertise, particularly in the areas of carbon neutral and resilient design, enabled us to understand the site’s unique potential. In the final round of the competition, we will continue to work closely with our collaborators to create a compelling vision for urban regeneration.

Chicago

Working with Urban Intersection Partners, the Street Society, and JLK Architects, Arup’s Chicago team provided environmental expertise and advisory services for the Pershing Road Buildings site.

Our Chicago team plans to utilise Arup’s global C40 experience and knowledge to help create a community-driven historic renovation, honouring the site’s unique traditions in Chicago’s Central Manufacturing District. Urban Intersection was the seed equity and community activist for the development of Wicker Park in Chicago, from 1980 to the mid-90s. The Street Society is an international urban innovation agency, with an acumen for ingenuity, assisting in the development of transformative, inclusive urban and property projects across the globe. JLK Architects specializes in the creative adaptive reuse of older or historic buildings. With their working knowledge of local issues and history, JLK will ground the project within the neighborhood and provide preservation services to restore the façades to achieve Historic Tax Credits.

Outside of the Americas, our colleagues in Madrid and Milan also made the shortlist for the Vicálvaro and Scalo Greco Breda sites, respectively. See the full list of teams shortlisted to proceed to the final phase of the Reinventing Cities competition.
