Vincom Center, the luxury shopping mall at Landmark 81 in Ho Chi Minh City, has now opened its doors. Located on the banks of the River Saigon, Landmark 81 is 461.2m tall, making it the tallest building in Vietnam and one of the tallest in the world.

The 50,000m² shopping centre occupies six of the skyscraper’s 81 storeys, housing more than 100 domestic and international brands.

Arup provided geotechnical, structural and fire engineering services for the landmark tower. We have overcome a number of challenges including working in an area with exceptionally poor ground conditions under a fast-track design and construction programme. Our design solution adopted a thick raft supported by barrette piles to allow maximum flexibility for subsequent development of the design even as the foundation was being constructed.

Arup’s fire engineers introduced a lift-assisted evacuation strategy for people with various mobility conditions – first of its kind in Vietnam – which reduces the total evacuation time and risk of injury.

The skyscraper with a total GFA of 241,000m² forms the centrepiece of Vingroup’s Vinhomes Central Park development. The rest of the tower – comprising offices, apartments and hotel rooms – will be operational by the end of 2019.
