Arup’s detailed planning and implementation for the Admiralty Station extension project has received a Certificate of Merit at the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) Grand Award 2023 under the Infrastructure Category.
The winning project demonstrates how we contribute our multidisciplinary expertise towards the development of Hong Kong.
The expansion of the Admiralty Station has completed the East Rail Line cross-harbour extension which allows passengers to reach Hong Kong Island’s commercial, convention and exhibition areas on the East Rail Line without changing lines, bringing about significant convenience and benefits to a majority of citizens with fast, convenient and reliable railway services and reduced journey time.
Arup is the lead consultant providing multidisciplinary services, including planning, architectural subconsultancy, civil, structural and geotechnical engineering, building services, fire engineering and other specialist services.
To realise the additional platform levels to be constructed to the original station that has been built for 40 years, we adopted an innovative underpinning approach which allowed the construction team to excavate a depth of 50m (equivalent to 17 storeys) and build three more platform levels underneath the existing station structure, in the middle of busy Admiralty, without affecting the normal services of the Island Line and Tsuen Wan Line.
A performance-based fire engineering approach was adopted in designing the building services and fire safety strategy. The expected performance of the smoke control system was simulated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis.
The innovative use of underpinning works with the synchronised jacking system as well as the performance-based fire engineering approach with CFD analysis used in this project can be further applied to other construction projects, establishing an exemplar for the industry.
The HKIE Grand Award 2023 is a brand-new award scheme of the Institution to promote and recognise the importance of the engineering profession and its contributions to the development of Hong Kong.
