Arup continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing Hong Kong’s water infrastructure as the Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works (NTM WTW) Extension project commences construction in October. Appointed by the Water Supplies Department (WSD) of the HKSAR Government, Arup is providing crucial expertise for this strategic project, which will secure a reliable and sustainable water supply for the Northern Metropolis.
Following the successful design, tendering, and funding approval for the Package One works, Arup has deployed a resident site team to supervise the construction phase and is also advancing the design for further upgrade to 640,000m3/day.
Upon completion, target by 2030, the NTM WTW’s treatment capacity will significantly increase from 230,000 m³/day to 440,000 m³/day, bolstering Hong Kong’s water resilience and supporting long-term urban growth.
Key elements of the works include:
- Construction of new water treatment facilities within the existing NTM WTW.
- Laying approximately 8 km of freshwater trunk mains to Tan Kwai Tsuen in Yuen Long.
- Construction of a 0.6 km tunnel for raw water mains and associated chambers.
- Extension of the Ngau Tam Mei Fresh Water Primary Service Reservoir by an additional capacity of about 54,000 m³.
Arup is integrating advanced water treatment technologies to maximise space utilisation and improve energy and process efficiency, contributing to reduced costs and a lower carbon footprint. Aligned with WSD’s Smart Water Strategy for the Northern Metropolis, digital twins of both the existing and expanded water treatment works are being developed, enabling real-time monitoring, scenario simulation, and predictive maintenance.
