Cologne is set to receive two new light rail stations along Line 13 as part of an infrastructure upgrade designed to improve connectivity between densely populated districts in the northern part of the city.
The project is being delivered by a joint venture between Arup and DB Engineering & Consulting GmbH acting as General Planner from the initial concept stage through to future operations. The Cologne City Council’s Office for Bridges, Tunnels and Light Rail Construction is the client for the scheme.
The new stations on Niehler Strasse and Boltensternstrasse will fill existing large gaps along the elevated track that currently serves Line 13. Both stations will be integrated into the developing 'Niehler Gürtel', a planned green corridor that will bring additional park space to Cologne’s inner city. For the Niehler Strasse station, the planning team has prioritised a modular construction approach and an open, bright architectural design that maintains clear views of Cologne Cathedral.
The joint venture partners' vision extends beyond the station structures and includes integrating the proposed fast cycle path with the stations, as well as dedicated areas for car-sharing services, e-scooter charging facilities and pedestrian-friendly traffic management. The concept also incorporates the use of solar panels on weather protection structures and an overall reduction in material usage during construction.
By enhancing the network with two additional stops, the city aims to increase accessibility and enhance the overall attractiveness of the light rail system.
