A heartfelt thanksgiving ceremony was held today to mark the grand reopening of The Salvation Army Grace Workshop in Jat Min Chuen, Sha Tin. Revitalised with a fresh image, the workshop reaffirms its commitment to community service.
The workshop has been promoting environmental protection through recycling and selling upcycled goods. It also encourages social inclusivity by providing vocational training and employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities and special educational needs (SEN). This transformative relaunch, made possible through a dynamic cross-sector collaboration between Arup and The Salvation Army, introduces an enhanced space designed to elevate its community-focused services. Arup has consistently supported diverse community initiatives over the years, enhancing public spaces and environments in pursuit of a better world, a vision that resonates deeply with The Salvation Army’s mission to spread hope, love, and joy to communities and those in need. Through our Community Engagement programme, Arup supported the workshop renovation project on a pro bono basis.
The revamped Grace Workshop features two distinct areas: the vibrant Market Hall, a community-inspired shop adorned with the warm, homely colours of Jat Min Chuen, including tent-like elements that elevate the shopping experience; the Wellness Zone, a versatile new space for workshops and community engagement, fostering stronger neighbourhood connections.
Theresa Yeung, East Asia Managing Principal of Arup said, “We are delighted to collaborate with The Salvation Army on this renovation project, fully supporting the transformation of the Grace Workshop into a more comfortable and versatile space to serve the community. Over the years, Arup has enabled our members to leverage their professional skills and expertise to support charitable organisations and disadvantaged groups through various community initiatives, contributing to the society and shaping a better world.”
“The Salvation Army and Arup have established a strategic partnership, and this renovation of the Grace Workshop Shatin Shop demonstrates the power of cross-sector collaboration to unlock new possibilities,” said Lieutenant Colonel Minny Chan, Chief Secretary of The Salvation Army. “Today’s social service needs are diverse and ever-changing, requiring us to transcend boundaries, embrace varied perspectives, and seek innovative solutions. Cross-sector collaboration brings together insights from different fields, opening up new possibilities. We look forward to more such partnerships to create services that meet the demands of our time, invigorate communities, and deliver meaningful change for those in need.”
