Global engineering and built environment consultancy, Arup, has been appointed as the environmental sustainability lead within the Nuclear Decommissioning Solutions Partnership, led by Cavendish Nuclear.

The partnership has finalised agreements for Lot 3 of Sellafield’s wider high hazard risk reduction framework, worth up to £2.4bn which will focus on the safe retrieval and management of waste from legacy storage silos. It will deliver collaborative solutions across the supply chain for Sellafield’s nuclear decommissioning programme. As part of this effort, Arup will provide specialist environmental and sustainability expertise throughout the programme’s whole lifecycle, from early design and planning, through to long-term operations.

This win supports Sellafield’s broader goals within the Infrastructure Delivery Partnership (IDP), aligning with the organisation’s net zero strategy, addressing both legacy nuclear challenges and future energy transition objectives. Working closely with Cavendish, Arup will draw on its multidisciplinary and global expertise to deliver a positive impact at the local level, in and around Sellafield.

Embedding sustainability into Sellafield’s nuclear decommissioning programme presents a unique opportunity to protect the environment and creates lasting benefits to communities for generations to come. Being involved from the outset, Arup’s role ensures that sustainability has been a fundamental element of the decision-making process.
