Funded by the Government of Sharjah, the Sharjah Marine Science Research Centre provides 12 wet and dry laboratories, research aquariums, a dive centre and boat launch facilities.

Located at the University of Khorfakkan in the UAE, it will enable scientists to study coral reefs, deep-sea environments and coastal ecosystems, supporting the university’s ambition to become a global leader in marine science.

As lead consultant during the design stage, Arup optimised the building’s placement on a former quarry site to ensure stability and resilience against storm surges. Working with ATI Consultants, Arup incorporated local gabbro stone and titanium zinc into the façade, reducing carbon emissions and creating a durable, low-maintenance envelope.

The engineers designed advanced environmental systems to maintain precise temperature and humidity levels across laboratories and aquariums. The centre features five distinct water systems including seawater and artificial seawater with controllable salinity and an on-site treatment plant for grey and black water. These features, together with energy-efficient systems, support the centre’s specialist research needs while reducing environmental impact.

The project drew on Arup’s global expertise in laboratory design and Building Information Modelling to deliver a fully integrated model that simplified decision-making and reduced risk.

The centre will host a new generation of marine scientists and strengthen Sharjah’s role in advancing ocean research.

I feel privileged to have contributed to the Marine Research Centre. This project brought together Arup teams from Dubai, London, Turkey and Madrid. Each team brought their own perspective, working and thinking beyond traditional boundaries and disciplines to respond to a challenging brief. Working closely with our client and local partners, we created a facility that helps position the UAE as a leader in marine research. I am proud of what we achieved together.
