Arup engineer Furla Chan has been awarded a Certificate of Merit at the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) Young Engineer of the Year Award.

Starting her career as a mechanical engineer in 2011, Furla joined Arup in 2019 to pursue her aspiration for contributing her knowledge and expertise to large-scale projects. Since then, she has taken up a project management role in some complex infrastructure projects where multidisciplinary integration and coordination are critical to project delivery and risk management. She has contributed to the design of two district cooling projects at Kwu Tung North New Development Area and Hung Shui Kiu New Development Area – two out of the five currently in used and planned in Hong Kong. As the project engineer, she has played a leading role throughout various phases, from bidding, design review, detailed design, tender to construction.

Furla is strongly committed to serving the engineering industry. She has been serving the HKIE and IMechE HK Branch since her graduation, organising activities to promote our profession. Keen to nurture the younger generations and contribute to the community, she has been actively supporting STEM school programmes, and serving the public as an appeal panel board member for the Hong Kong Government’s EPD, advising on appeal cases with her professional knowledge.

The award honours the outstanding young engineers who have made commendable engineering achievements and valuable contributions to the continuous development of Hong Kong.

It is truly an immerse honour to be recognised at the HKIE’s Young Engineer of the Year Award. I’m grateful to the firm’s support and opportunities which have helped me achieve my career goal, and I look forward to seeing more young engineers contribute to the engineering profession and the community.
