Arup and leading circular economy company Concular have formed a strategic partnership. The two firms provide end-to-end solutions for construction projects, addressing the complex sustainability challenges faced by the market.
With over 75 years of international experience in architecture and civil engineering, Arup has been integrating circular processes into our design and consultancy services. Some examples include the regeneration of the 1 Triton Square office building in London and the newly built hybrid timber HAUT tower in Amsterdam.
The addition of Concular's comprehensive expertise in digitally evaluating building data and developing refurbishment and demolition concepts creates an innovative partnership. This collaboration will enable seamless integration of circular construction processes into digital planning and accounting, helping to make the entire building lifecycle more efficient and sustainable.
The partnership aims to set new a standard for the construction industry by using Concular's circularLCA software to ensure comprehensive reporting on circular design and construction criteria. This includes life cycle assessments for DGNB or QNG certification or the mandatory building resource passport. At portfolio level, clients can use the software to identify stranded assets and generate recommendations for action. This approach makes the economic benefits of closed material cycles measurable and offers clients a tool for transparent reporting on the progress of their sustainability goals.
Martin Pauli, Global Circular Economy Services Leader at Arup, said: “Arup brings extensive experience in applying closed-loop material cycle principles to architecture and civil engineering. Concular specialises in building deconstruction, component reuse, and digital reporting. We complement each other and will work to accelerate the transition to circular construction.”
Concular’s focus on digitisation simplifies the circular process and aligns it with modern planning requirements. This approach results in significant savings in disposal and procurement costs, positioning the partnership at the forefront of sustainable construction.
Dominik Campanella, Managing Director of Concular, said: “Concular offers a holistic solution for conserving resources through circular economy. With Arup at our side, we can put our circular concepts into practice even more effectively. Our circularLCA software ensures that the benefits of circularity are not only realised, but also made measurable.”
The partnership between Arup and Concular is a significant step towards creating a more sustainable construction industry. The companies together offer a solution that transforms the entire property development process, maximising both environmental and economic benefits. This combination of expertise and technology paves the way for a future-ready construction industry.
