Arup has been recognised at the inaugural Iarnród Éireann Supplier Sustainability Awards, receiving the Emission Reduction Impact of the Year award for its progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The awards celebrate suppliers demonstrating leadership in sustainability and measurable carbon reduction across Ireland. Arup was recognised for its clear and evidence-based approach to measuring and reporting emissions, alongside sustained progress in reducing its operational and value chain impact.
Arup’s Net Zero Plan sets out its pathway to achieving science-based net zero emissions by 2040 across its offices, travel and supply chain. Since establishing these targets, the firm has made significant progress in reducing emissions. This has been supported by measures including increased use of renewable electricity, lower-carbon ways of working, and continued efforts to improve the performance of its offices and day-to-day operations.
Alongside reducing its own emissions, Arup is embedding sustainability across its projects and working closely with clients, suppliers and partners to support emissions reduction at scale.
Arup’s approach to emissions reduction is reflected in its work with Iarnród Éireann, supporting the decarbonisation of Ireland’s rail network. This includes preparing the network for electrification and low-emission operation, exploring the use of battery electric multiple units (BEMUs) for services in Cork and along the DART+ Coastal North corridor, and assessing the potential to electrify the Dublin-Belfast Enterprise line. Together, these projects support the transition to lower-carbon rail and contribute to national and EU climate targets.
Mary Considine, Chief Executive, Iarnród Éireann, said:
“At Iarnród Éireann, we acknowledge our responsibility in developing a sustainable transport network. Iarnród Éireann is a critical part of our national infrastructure, moving thousands of people and goods across the country each day; therefore, we have an obligation to ensure that we do so in the most sustainable manner possible. Our Sustainability Awards recognise the achievements our suppliers and our internal teams are making as part of our transition to a carbon-free transport operation model in line with our Rail 2050 strategy. My sincere congratulations to all the winners from within Iarnród Éireann and to our external suppliers.”
Zita Langenbach, Europe North Transport Leader, Arup, said:
“We’re delighted to be recognised by Iarnród Éireann at its inaugural Supplier Sustainability Awards. This award reflects the commitment of our colleagues across Arup who are helping to turn our net zero ambition into meaningful action. It also highlights the importance of working with clients, partners and suppliers to support a more sustainable future.”
