Our built environment is facing unparalleled challenges including climate threats, energy transitions, resource management, technological integration and ageing infrastructure. Yet, these challenges also present immense opportunities for transformation.

Arup Research Competition 2024 invites research postgraduates from universities and research institutes in Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland China to propose research projects that will help develop resilient infrastructure, communities and cities.

Dedicated to sustainable development, Arup is committed to reimagining and reshaping the built environment. Through research and innovation, we create better solutions for our clients and the wider community. A key component of this is nurturing young talent to foster technical excellence and creative problem-solving.

Themed ‘Resilience: Alleviating climate emergencies in cities’, the competition aims to encourage research postgraduates to develop novel pathways and solutions that help mitigate the impacts of climate change.  These include designing resilient infrastructure, implementing green technologies and engaging stakeholders to understand their needs and potential solutions.

Dr Ricky Tsui, Director of East Asia Research and Development, Arup, said:

“At Arup, we are deeply committed to leveraging research and innovation to develop transformative solutions that address the complex challenges facing our built environment. By nurturing the next generation of talented researchers, we can harness their creativity and technical expertise to drive meaningful progress and create a more sustainable future for all.”

Dr Vincent Cheng, Arup Fellow and Director of Climate and Sustainability Services in East Asia, said:

“Climate change poses unprecedented threats to our cities and communities, demanding that we rethink the way we design, construct and operate our built infrastructure. As we strive to build a more resilient future, it is crucial that we foster innovative, multidisciplinary research that can deliver effective, scalable solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate emergencies.”

The competition is open for application until 16 October.
