Arup, together with its joint venture partners Rambøll, Böger Jäckle and TEC Tunnel Engineering Consultants, has been awarded the role of the General Planner of the Fehmarnsund Tunnel; the project will complete an essential component of the Fehmarnsund Fixed Link between Denmark and Germany and will see travel times between Hamburg and Copenhagen reduced by up to 50 percent.
Building on Arup’s extensive 17 year experience on the Fehmarnbelt Link as a strategic consultant, the firm is now helping to realise the Fehmarsund Link and is responsible for the detailed design of the Fehrmansund Tunnel, further highlighting Arup’s strong global expertise and capacity to deliver large-scale infrastructure projects.
Linking mainland Germany with the island of Fehmarn, the new immersed tunnel will span 2.2 kilometres and comprise a four-lane road and a double-track railway line; enabling a continuous road connection for drivers travelling between Hamburg and Copenhagen. The rail link is a key element of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and will enhance cross-border mobility.
Directly contributing to the European Union's goal of shortening travel times between major European cities, the new connection is not only a symbol of successful European cooperation, but also a catalyst for strengthening economic relations between Scandinavia and Central Europe.
The project, jointly managed by DB InfraGO AG and DEGES GmbH, will be implemented using the alliance model contract.
