Arup’s revitalisation work of the Tung Chung Stream won the Edmund Hambly Medal at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Award 2024.

We have been appointed by the Hong Kong SAR Government to advise on Tung Chung New Town Extension project, including the biodiverse Tung Chung Stream ‒ a habitat of critical conservation value. Our innovative solution introduced a cutting-edge regional sustainable urban drainage system and a river park, a first-of-its-kind in Hong Kong. This system incorporated advanced techniques to filter pollutants from surface water before discharge into the stream.

In addition to restoring the stream to its natural state, Arup reconnected it with the local community by creating recreational spaces such as a river park featuring a butterfly garden, bird hide and botanical gardens. This accolade underscores our commitment to prioritising nature in our projects and our mission to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

The Edmund Hambly Medal recognises creative engineering project designs that contribute to mitigating and adapting to the significant impacts of climate change.

The project provides an outstanding example of sustainable development that effectively supports ecological conservation and human advancement. The awards committee agreed that this is how it should be done.
