Designs honoured at Hong Kong Institute of Planners Award 2022

‘Active Design for Healthier Lifestyle’ 

Our study on ‘Active Design for Healthier Lifestyle’ is honoured with a Certificate of Merit. Arup provided city planning services to develop urban design guidelines promoting a healthier and active lifestyle in Hong Kong. 

As a first-of-its-kind study in Hong Kong, it aimed to mainstream the concept of active design, encouraging more intentional and unintentional physical activity such as walking, stair climbing and cycling by exploring our neighbourhoods and buildings. Using the study findings, we have formulated a set of active design guidelines to create preconditions for people to make healthier lifestyle choices, improving the health and wellbeing for all through thoughtful neighbourhood and building design.

West Lake University Station TOD integrated development urban design

Our design for the Westlake University transit-oriented development (TOD) in Hangzhou has also been awarded a Certificate of Merit. Arup provided masterplanning, urban design, architectural design and resilient planning for this project. 

The core design concept was to establish a linkage between the future campus and transportation while preserving the site’s ecological resources. Resilience was one of our major design considerations. By constructing a blue, green and grey infrastructure system, we aimed to improve the ecological value in the area by introducing nature into the planning. The West Lake University Station fosters the integration of TOD, ecology, industry and research, creating a knowledge economy hub in a park-like setting, a first in Hangzhou.

Organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Planners (HKIP), the annual award honours the outstanding achievements of its members and related professionals in town planning, encouraging pursuit of excellence amongst planners in Hong Kong, mainland China and neighbouring areas.
