The Fengyi Bridge, the first major bridge in the Xi’an High-tech Industries Development zone in China, officially opened in May. Arup provided multidisciplinary services to realise the world’s widest multi-tower cable-stayed bridge deck with a full-floating articulation system.
Stretching over a length of 526m, this 3-tower cable-stayed bridge features a 57m width and accommodates a 5-lane dual carriageway, providing a vital transportation link for the region. It also offers a vibrant public destination with pedestrian and bicycle paths integrated on both sides of the deck, doubling as scenic viewing platforms.
Leveraging our international expertise and local practices, Arup provided total design services ranging from architecture and landscape to structural design. Our innovative solutions ensure that the bridge stands tall with its mono-pole shaped, structurally efficient towers reaching a height of 95m, while the fan-shaped distribution of cables blends harmoniously with the natural environment.
Our design for the Fengyi Bridge draws inspiration from the rich local culture of Xi’an. The bridge’s distinctive 3-tower structure mirrors the iconic mountain peaks that surround the city, while the cable structure pays homage to Xi’an’s local silk industry, with its woven strands reminiscent of silk thread. This human-centric design approach celebrates the local legacy while providing a unique and seamless crossing experience. The design of the Fengyi Bridge serves as a great showcase, promoting the concept of designing municipal facilities as public spaces.
