Macau is one of the richest cities in the world. It is located on the western side of the Pearl River Delta, facing the South China Sea. Macau lies to the south of a thriving industrial area in Guangdong province and has a thriving tourist industry with resorts, stadia, restaurants and casinos, as well as many heritage squares and buildings. The historic centre of Macau has been chosen as a World Heritage Site.
Arup has completed a number of major resort and casino projects in Macau. These have changed the cityscape of Macau, as well as the city’s economic development. The firm worked on the Sands Casino, the first US-operated gaming facility to open in Macau. The Venetian Macao, sister to the Venetian in Las Vegas, was another of Arup’s projects, notable for the speed of construction, as well as introducing pre-fabrication construction techniques to the area. Adjacent to the Venetian Macao is the Four Seasons Hotel Macau, in Cotai Strip, another Arup project for a high end hotel and casino development. The Four Seasons Hotel was opened in August 2008, but there is still some external landscape work and a serviced apartment building undergoing the final phase of construction and fitting out.
Arup is also expanding to provide infrastructure consultancy services to Macau.
