Located immediately north of Hong Kong, the city of Shenzhen was China’s first Special Economic Zone. What was a small fishing village in the 1970s has become, thanks to China policy of reform and openness to foreign investment during the 1980s and 1990s, one of the fastest-growing cities in the world and a major financial centre. Its proximity to Hong Kong and its Pearl River Delta location have ensured Shenzhen’s success as a busy port and a thriving high-tech economy.

Arup’s numerous projects include the 248m tall Shenzhen Stock Exchange Headquarters. A three-storey plinth houses the stock exchange’s trading floor and back office, which sit on top of a commercial office tower. When complete, the project will be one of the first buildings that can achieve the green building label in China.

Another prestigious project is the 439m high Kingkey Financial Tower, which is the tallest building in the city.

Arup’s transportation projects include the performance-based fire engineering design for Futian Station interchange and work on the 21 km long Shenzhen Metro Line 4, a new underground metro system that is due to open in 2012.
