Seoul is the capital of South Korea and its chief economic, political and cultural centre. It lies on the basin of the Han River in the north-west of South Korea and around 50km from the border with North Korea.
Arup’s portfolio in Seoul includes many high profile office buildings such as Samsung Headquarters and Hansol Headquarters. The intricate façade of the SK Telecom Tower, a 150m tall building shaped like a mobile phone, shows Arup’s work in stark contrast to conventional corporate style.
The firm’s residential projects include Tower Palace (phase 1), Hyperion in Mokdong, Galleria Palace and Acrovista, all located in the prime zone of Seoul, targeting the most high-end market.
Also Arup worked on the the Rodin Gallery in Taepyungro, the Leeum museum in Hannamdong and Seoul National University Museum with a three level enclosure that is cantilevered off a central core.
Arup’s technical excellence and innovation are also shown in the stylish fashion boutiques, including fit out of new Louis Vuitton shop and facade design for Boutique Monaco. Pioneering the use of LED lighting was the Galleria Fashion Mall in Seoul, in which it covers an entire building as a dynamic second skin that bursts into a custom-designed lighting design at night and which was the forerunner of the GreenPix Media Wall, in West Beijing.
