80th Avenue Medellín Tramway – Connecting Colombia´s second largest city through a safe, sustainable tramway

Arup has been working in Colombia since 2007, and we established a presence in Bogotá in early 2014. We collaborate globally with staff from our offices across the Americas and our offices in Madrid, Istanbul, and London, allowing us to provide a wide range of professional, multi-disciplinary services that adapt to the local regulatory and market conditions. 

Our portfolio of over 70 projects across Colombia in both the private and public sectors includes transportation infrastructure projects such as the 80th Avenue Medellin Tramway, Colombia toll roads, and El Dorado Airport and emblematic buildings such us Ágora convention center, Vitrum, and Atrio.

With a population of eight million, Bogotá is one of the largest cities in Latin America and a growing international center for business and culture. This Capital District of Colombia is leading the country in the development of new mixed-use commercial buildings and transportation infrastructure.

Arup is helping to transform Bogotá through our global expertise and multidisciplinary service offerings, including technical and socio-environmental advisory, integrated planning, and rail and energy consulting. Through our work in Bogotá and beyond, Arup has become a well-recognized contributor to the infrastructure market in Colombia. 

Across Colombia, Arup has completed a large portfolio of major projects that showcase our dedication to shaping the built environment. We have worked on several important infrastructure projects in the transportation sector, including upgrades to the El Dorado Airport. Arup also served as the lenders’ technical advisor to finance 16 fourth-generation road concessions, seven of which are currently under construction. More recently, Arup conducted a comprehensive analysis to implement PPPs in the Colombian rail sector; performed value engineering and viability design for a Light Rail System in Medellín; and contributed masterplanning to the Connecta 26 business ecosystem. The Bogotá office also contributes key projects in the energy sector, including hydroelectric projects, a regasification plant, energy transmission lines. 

Outside of Colombia, the Bogotá office supported the World Bank to develop an integrated urban strategy for supporting the regeneration of riverside communities in Montevideo, Uruguay. Arup supported five catalytic projects, incorporating resiliency, sustainable development, and community engagement to empower the local community.
