Arup's response to Covid-19
Clients and partners will appreciate that Arup takes the health and safety of its staff and stakeholders extremely seriously and in the face of this pandemic it is more critical than ever that we all play our part in slowing the spread of this disease.
Arup was established in Malaysia in 1964 as Ove Arup dan Rakan-Rakan, after the London-based firm won a competition to redevelop the General Hospital in Kuala Lumpur. In 1983, it was incorporated into a private limited company and renamed Arup Jururunding Sdn Bhd. Since then, Arup Malaysia has grown in size and broadened its disciplines, working in the evolving urban landscapes of Kuala Lumpur, Penang and other states.
Our team of more than 300 people delivers engineering and advisory services for every stage of a project, from inception to completion and after; from vision, strategy and business case through planning, engineering and project implementation to operational readiness and asset management. Our multidisciplinary expertise helps clients solve their most difficult challenges, turning exciting ideas into tangible reality.
In the 1970s, the Penang office opened to undertake the civil and structural design for the Penang Urban Centre, known as Komtar. The 65-storey tower remains the tallest building in Penang and our involvement in its revitalisation works won the 2017 Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Award for Best Project (medium building category).
Arup projects have enhanced connectivity and economy in Penang. They include the Second Penang Bridge, one of the longest bridges in South East Asia and Setia SPICE Convention Centre, for which we won the prestigious Association of Consulting Engineers, Malaysia Gold Award of Special Merit 2019.
Our team has developed its strength in urban rejuvenation of historic cities to create sustainable and liveable environments. We worked on reviving a heritage mansion as part of the Penang Digital Library II (which won the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) Gold Award 2019 in the alteration & addition category), as well as designs for the 88-year-old St Joseph’s Novitiate heritage building, which earned us the Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia Gold Award of Special Merit 2013.
