Scotland’s capital city is the seat of the Scottish Parliament and its medieval and Georgian architecture make it a major tourist draw, with several districts listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is renowned for its International Festival held in August and its Hogmanay street celebrations attract revelers from around the world every New Year.
Edinburgh enjoyed the greatest economic growth of any UK city between 2002 and 2005 and has the highest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of any UK city outside London. It is particularly strong in a number of key sectors, such as finance, tourism, science and technology and creative industries.
Arup have been working in the city for 50 years have been responsible for the design of many of its landmark modern buildings such as the award winning Edinburgh International Conference Centre, the Scottish Parliament Building and Our Dynamic Earth. In contrast, we have worked on the restoration of much loved historic buildings such as the Palace of Holyrood and St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile. Arup are currently advising on the redevelopment of key areas of the city centre including Quartermile, Haymarket, Caltongate and the St James Centre.
The Edinburgh office has a strong track record in the commercial, arts, education, laboratory and healthcare sectors and are currently engaged in a range of projects right across Scotland most notably the Sick Children’s Hospital at Little France in the south east of the city.
Arup have also planned and designed infrastructure to assist in the regeneration of large areas of the city’s waterfront at Granton and at Leith and we provided technical support for the largest planning application ever granted in the city at Leith Docks. We designed the enabling works infrastructure for the strategically important Edinburgh Bio-Quarter and are currently working on the implementation of the Water of Leith Flood Scheme for the City of Edinburgh Council.
