London Olympic Aquatic Centre – With its distinctive architecture and focus on legacy use, the Aquatics Centre was designed to be sustainable.

Arup was founded by Ove Arup in 1946. Our work addresses every aspect of the built environment, from initial planning and advisory services, through building design and structural engineering. We are a community of collaborators, bringing together over 90 disciplines to help realise our clients’ commercial goals. In the UK we’re at the forefront of developing new transport systems like Crossrail or Heathrow Terminal 5, producing inspiring workplaces like Whitecollar Factory, and helping cities prepare for climate change. From sound investment decisions to innovative bridge designs, clients come to Arup for our creativity and technical excellence.

Leeds and Yorkshire

Since opening in 1989, we have helped shape the growth of Leeds and Yorkshire with a multi-disciplinary team of 350 staff. Some of our major regeneration projects include Leeds South Bank, the modernisation of the University of Leeds campus, York Central, the transformation of Hull’s Public Realm for the City of Culture in 2017, and Bradford City Park. We are proud to be working on some of the largest infrastructure projects in the region, including the HS2 route and station in Leeds, Sirius Minerals’ major Potash mine near Whitby in North Yorkshire, the Transpennine Rail Upgrade, and Northern Powerhouse Rail.

Working with water

Our team provided pioneering technical support, design and planning services for the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme. We designed the first mechanical moving weirs to be used in the UK; protecting 3,000 homes and 500 existing businesses from flooding.

Building a cultural legacy

As part of Hull’s UK City of Culture 2017, we helped install a remarkable 75 metre, 28 tonne art installation named Blade; the world’s largest handmade fibre glass component cast as a single object. We helped design the 13,500 capacity Leeds First Direct Arena, the Tetley art gallery, the Hepworth gallery in Wakefield and the University of Leeds Brotherton Library Treasures Gallery.

Supporting Inclusive Growth

To widen awareness among young people of career opportunities in the built environment sector, we collaborate with the Ahead Partnership, including through our annual Engineering Awareness Week, and partner with Leeds City Council to engage schools in our HS2 workshops. We are corporate sponsors of NorthInvest, a not-for-profit platform which connects technology start-ups with investors, and we are proud supporters of the Leeds Community Foundation. Additionally, we are advising on the Leeds District Heating scheme which will help tackle fuel poverty.
