Coal Drops Yard – Transforming a disused industrial space into a vibrant shopping destination with high-quality public realm.
Arup was founded by Ove Arup in 1946. Today, we are 6,000 strong in the UK, working on local, national and international projects. We are a professional services firm with a focus on the built environment and we work closely and collaboratively with our clients to develop the solutions they need today – and tomorrow. We bring deep expertise in strategy, design, planning and engineering, and our project portfolio ranges from the UK Government’s heat decarbonisation programme, to the design of new cancer treatment centres and playing a central role in engineering a more resilient rail network.

Arup has been making a positive contribution to Nottingham since 1986 when our multi-disciplinary team engineered and designed the 2,500 seat Theatre Royal and Concert Hall. Our work on this project included structural engineering and acoustics for a considerable range of events with minimum compromise, including trade shows and sporting events. We continue to be associated with iconic developments such as Derby Arena and the Jubilee Campus at The University of Nottingham, where we transformed a brownfield site into an extension to one of the UK’s oldest universities.
At Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery, we provided a range of specialist services, including geotechnics and civil engineering to deliver gallery spaces on a complex sloping site, which remained undeveloped for many years due to the presence of historical caves and a railway tunnel portal. Our work on the Trent Bridge Cricket Ground Parr Stand saw us provide mechanical and electrical engineering, and specialist lighting design. Regionally, our team has been involved with the widening of the M1 motorway and the Defence National Rehabilitation Centre.
Collaboration with universities
We work closely with world class universities. We helped shape the design for the George Green Library at the University of Nottingham and a major new Waterside Campus for the University of Northampton. But our relationship with universities does not end with design. We provide tutoring and mentoring at the University of Nottingham and frequently provide careers advice and engineering talks at schools.
World-class specialist know-how
Our is work is not just based in the Nottinghamshire region as our team in Nottingham regularly contribute to a number of projects internationally. Specialist subject areas include accredited conservation engineering, pavement engineering and ground contamination. These skills have been critical to the successful delivery of important infrastructure projects, such as Dublin Airport’s Terminal 2 building.
