Ben Smith is Arup’s Director for Energy and Climate Change Consulting. A Chartered Environmentalist, Ben has 20 years of experience working as an environmental consultant specialised on sustainable development, energy strategy, climate change and urban resilience.

He has worked with a range of clients including landowners and developers, corporates, third sector organisations as well as local, city and government departments in projects across the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Australia.

Ben leads Arup’s partnership with the C40 Cities, and was our project director for much of the work delivered as part of the Rockefeller Foundations 100 Resilient Cities programme. Some of his recent work includes research on consumption based emissions in C40 Cities and support to the Greater London Authority in developing their City Resilience Plan. He was also the project director for a commission that delivered guidance on inclusive climate action for C40 Cities.

Ben is a member of the UKRI UK Climate Resilience Steering Committee and has recently served as a judge for the Climathon Global Awards and for WWF’s One Planet City Challenge. He is a Trustee of the National Park City Foundation, working to catalyse 25 National Park Cities globally by 2025.
