James Duff established Arup’s lighting design workstream in Ireland and now leads the team across a wide range of both natural and artificial lighting projects. He has a passion for daylight design, in addition to designing artificial lighting that is centred on people and their perceived experiential satisfaction.

With a background in physics and mathematics, James applies a technical approach to project delivery that complements his interest in architecture and conceptual design thinking. He also has strong ties with formal lighting research, having completed a PhD at the Dublin Institute of Technology. He now supervises PhD students completing research in similar areas.
