Jonathan Kinghorn

Principal | Cities, Planning and Design – Australasia Leader

Leading Arup’s Australasia City, Planning and Design team, Jonathan is focused on building teams and capabilities to deliver value for clients, cities and communities. He has a sophisticated understanding of different challenges cities face and uses elements of creativity, diverse perspectives from his team and bold decision making to create change.

Jonathan started his career with Arup in 1997 as a transport  planner and has since led and developed teams across Australia, the Americas, and United Kingdom, growing Arup’s service capabilities. Having directed teams on several city-shaping projects, he has learnt that the key to successful project delivery comes from sharing knowledge, caring about people and projects, and daring to do things differently.

Curious at heart, he believes that by being bold and asking big questions at the start of a project can align teams, solve challenges, and help make critical decisions. This includes making the right decisions when planning a project to ensure our work meets sustainable development goals and is fit for the future.

Jonathan is particularly proud of his work at Melbourne Airport, helping solve operational challenges and delivering a quality passenger experience for the whole journey. Having lived and worked across the globe, he understands the critical role airports play as the gateway to connect people to people, cities and regions.

He is a member of the Australian Planning Institute and the Royal Town Planning Institute, a professional body representing planners in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
