Stefan Sanders is the Rail Advisory Leader for Australasia. He combines his technical rail business consultancy expertise with his global experience to offer strategic advice and uncover new opportunities for our rail clients.

Based in Melbourne, he brings over 30 years of diverse global rail experience to our clients in Australasia. His entrepreneurial approach to business has helped build and shape Arup’s rail business in the United Kingdom and globally.

With experience working across every aspect of rail from operations and restructuring to consulting, Stefan brings a unique perspective to client conversations. He provides our rail clients with a holistic view of their organisation and their opportunities.

Stefan takes a collaborative approach to relationships, blending the technical with the personal to listen to client needs, understand their challenges and uncover solutions. He is not afraid of a challenge and takes a persistent and tenacious approach to problem solving and delivering new propositions to market. 

In addition to his rail expertise, he is a skilled in strategy, consulting, asset management, transport planning and economics.

He has proven experience in these areas for rail clients in the United Kingdom, Europe, South Africa, Australia and Southeast Asia. He focuses on sharing the vision of a project, engaging with clients and teams, and bringing everyone along on the journey.

While based in the UK, Stefan created our rail planning team which delivers transformative rail solutions and helps solve the challenges facing the rail industry. He also led our Rail Business across the UK, Middle East and Africa and advised clients across the region. Now based in Australasia, Stefan is strengthening our rail offering to provide strategic advice to our rail clients, most recently in Victoria and Queensland.

Stefan holds an economics degree and MBA. He is a chartered member of the Institute of Logistics and Transport and Institute, a member of the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators and a member of the Chartered Management Institute.
